Sri Lanka’s debutant, , faced an unfortunate end to his first Test appearance as he was forced to retire hurt after being struck on the helmet by a bouncer from Afghanistan’s Naveed Zadran on the third morning of the Test match. The blow occurred during the 107th over of Sri Lanka’s first innings.
Aged 24, Chamika Gunasekara tried to duck beneath bouncer but misjudged bounce, leading to ball hitting his helmet’s top part. Despite initially passing a concussion check and continuing to bat, Gunasekara experienced discomfort during the 110th over, prompting medical intervention.

Following an assessment, it was decided that Gunasekara would not return to the game. He was subsequently taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Kasun Rajitha was approved as a concussion substitute and began bowling early in Afghanistan’s second innings.
The incident highlights the importance of prioritizing player safety and the role of concussion substitutes in cricket to ensure the well-being of players after head injuries.
