KL Rahul’s composed half-century emerged as the cornerstone for India as they reached 222 for three at lunch, narrowing the gap despite England’s spinners displaying a more competitive effort on the second day of the first Test. Resuming from an overnight score of 119 for one, India now trails England by 24 runs. KL Rahul, unbeaten at 55, and Shreyas Iyer, not out at 34, are holding the crease.

Rahul showcased impeccable timing and confidence derived from his recent century against South Africa. Negotiating both spinners and pacers with technical correctness, he contributed significantly to India’s 103-run partnership, achieving a scoring rate of 3.81 runs per over.
Using his quick foot movement, KL Rahul skillfully hit Tom Hartley’s delivery for a boundary and showed accurate timing while hitting Mark Wood through the covers for a four. His ability to adjust was clear when he paddle-pulled Wood for a boundary behind square leg, reaching his 14th Test fifty with a single off Joe Root.
While Rahul held his ground, Shreyas faced challenges against Wood’s short-pitched deliveries. England strategically placed fielders to trap him, but Shreyas, contributing to a 63-run partnership, survived the barrage.
India faced an early setback in the day, losing overnight batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first over. Jaiswal’s attempt for a repeat boundary resulted in a tame return catch to Root. Gill, the other overnight batter, also fell to Hartley, providing the left-arm spinner with his maiden Test wicket.
Despite these early blows, Rahul’s resilience and Shreyas’ support have positioned India well, and they look poised to capitalize on their advantageous position in the ongoing Test match.
