India’s veteran off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, lauded the noteworthy batting performance of Yashasvi Jaiswal in his fifth Test match against England. Ashwin praised Jaiswal for his impressive 76-run innings, highlighting the seamless adaptation of the young player to the challenging five-day format, comparing it to a fish effortlessly taking to water.
In the opening day of the first Test, Yashasvi Jaiswal, along with skipper Rohit Sharma (24), exhibited a brilliant display, remaining unbeaten after facing 70 balls and striking nine boundaries and three sixes. The dynamic duo contributed to an 80-run opening stand, propelling India to 119 for one in response to England’s 246. Additionally, Shubman Gill remained not out on 14, leaving India trailing England by 127 runs at stumps.
Ashwin recognized that Jaiswal had done well in the IPL and had a strong beginning in domestic cricket. He compared Jaiswal to the bold playing style of Rishabh Pant. Ashwin shared his happiness in seeing Jaiswal play exceptionally well, highlighting the young batsman’s smooth adjustment to the challenges of Test cricket without making any mistakes.
Reflecting on the day’s play, Ashwin highlighted the initial challenge for England in the first session due to moisture, resulting in sufficient speed. However, he noted the subsequent slowing down of the pitch, affecting both speed and carry through to the slips. Ashwin praised the competitive total of 240 set by England, suggesting that a remarkable century from an Indian batsman on the following day could position the team favorably. The majority of the damage to England’s innings was inflicted by Ashwin (3/68) and Ravindra Jadeja (3/88), supported by Jasprit Bumrah (2/28) and Axar Patel (2/33).
