Batting collapses and inexperienced bowling trouble West Indies in the lead-up to the Australia series

West Indies encountered batting woes during a warm-up match against an inexperienced Cricket Australia XI in Adelaide, highlighting concerns ahead of the upcoming Test series against Australia. Despite multiple players reaching the half-century mark, the visitors failed to capitalize on their starts on a dry Karen Rolton wicket.
The CA XI, comprising players without Big Bash League contracts and lacking Test experience, posed a challenge for the West Indies batters in the three-day match. Bowlers such as Liam Haskett, Jack Nisbet, and Doug Warren, collectively with minimal first-class experience, created difficulties for the West Indian lineup.
While captain Kraigg Brathwaite contributed with a resilient 52 and displayed his form from the previous Australian summer, Kavem Hodge and Justin Greaves also showcased promise with scores of 52 and 62, potentially strengthening their chances for a Test debut.
However, concerns arose as top-order batsmen Kirk McKenzie and Alick Athanaze faced dismissals from bouncing deliveries, drawing attention to the tourists’ vulnerability against Australia’s fast bowlers. Brathwaite’s dismissal, attempting a paddle-sweep resulting in a lackluster shot, capped a collapse of 3 for 3.
A subsequent slump of 4 for 8, occurring post the second new ball, followed Hodge and Greaves’ solid partnership that took the tourists to 223 for 4.
As the West Indies gear up for the two-Test series, uncertainties loom over the team’s form, especially with a considerable number of debutants expected in the lineup for the first Test in Adelaide. Notable absentees like Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers have added to the team’s transitional phase, posing additional challenges for the side that faced convincing defeats in Australia during the previous tour.
With only a handful of players returning from the previous tour, the West Indies confront an uphill battle, emphasizing their struggle to find stability and consistency in the lead-up to the series against Australia.
