The unfortunate incident took place on February 20, 1998, when Lamba was fielding at the close-in position of silly point. Mehrab Hossain, the batsman at the crease, struck a powerful shot that hit Lamba on the head with immense force before deflecting toward the wicketkeeper. Although Lamba initially appeared unaffected, the impact had caused significant internal damage.

At first, Lamba continued to remain on the field, seemingly alert, giving little indication of the seriousness of the injury. However, it soon became evident that something was terribly wrong. He was rushed off the field and provided immediate medical attention.

Subsequent tests at a nearby hospital revealed that Lamba had suffered a severe internal hemorrhage due to the blow to his head. Despite efforts to save him, the injury proved fatal. After three days in critical condition, Raman Lamba tragically passed away on February 23, 1998.
