Jude Bellingham’s brief dismissal of a potential Manchester United transfer with the words “No, don’t be silly” significantly influenced Erik ten Hag’s strategy last summer.
Now a key figure at Real Madrid, where he has dazzled fans and scored 23 goals in all competitions, leading the team to both league and European glory, Bellingham’s transfer from Borussia Dortmund seemed inevitable. However, his journey to the Santiago Bernabéu wasn’t always a foregone conclusion.
A year ago, Bellingham’s future was still uncertain, with top European clubs vying for his signature. Manchester United was among the interested parties, with manager Erik ten Hag eager to strengthen his midfield following Paul Pogba’s departure. In April 2023, Ten Hag publicly expressed his interest when he responded with a smile to a fan’s suggestion of signing Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé, saying, “Why not?”
Despite this, Bellingham had already made his disinterest in United clear. In a viral video from March 2023, when asked if he was joining Manchester United, the then-teenager simply replied, “No. Don’t be silly,” amid interest from Liverpool and Real Madrid.
As it became evident that Bellingham favored a move to Spain, United’s interest waned, causing frustration for ten Hag. Bellingham had previously rebuffed United as well. During his time at Birmingham City, Ole Gunnar Solskjær had made a concerted effort to bring him to Old Trafford, including a meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson and a tour by football director John Murtough. However, Bellingham chose Dortmund for more immediate first-team opportunities.
Reflecting on these decisions, Bellingham’s choice to join Real Madrid has proven successful. Now a Ballon d’Or contender, he contrasts sharply with United, who finished last season in their lowest Premier League position to date, in eighth place.
