At the Paris 2024 Olympics, the women’s 71kg weightlifting event saw a historic performance from Olivia Reeves of the USA, who clinched the gold medal and set a new Olympic record. Reeves, competing in her first Olympic Games, lifted a record-breaking 117kg in the snatch and followed with a 145kg clean & jerk, totaling 262kg. This impressive performance not only earned her gold but also set a new Olympic snatch record.

Mari Leivis Sanchez of Colombia secured the silver medal with a snatch of 112kg and a clean & jerk of 145kg, bringing her total to 257kg. Despite her strong performance, she fell short of Reeves’ total. Angie Paola Palacios Dajomes of Ecuador won the bronze medal with a 116kg snatch and a 140kg clean & jerk, totaling 256kg.
Reeves’ victory marks the first Olympic weightlifting championship title for the United States since Tara Nott won the flyweight division at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. At just 21 years old, Reeves’ achievement highlights her remarkable talent and potential in the sport.
