City signed Echeverri, 18, from Argentine club River Plate for £12.5 million last year. The midfielder also reflected on his personal growth during his time at River Plate: “River became my second home, the club that formed me not only as a professional but also as a person.”
While his departure is bittersweet for River Plate fans, Echeverri’s arrival is a welcome boost for City, who have endured a tough period, with only one win in their last 12 matches. The young talent has made a significant impact during his time at River Plate, scoring four goals and providing six assists in 2024, despite the club’s disappointing fifth-place finish in the Primera División.
City expect to give Echeverri time to adjust to life in Manchester, and they have no immediate expectations for him to save the season. However, the player’s potential has already captured the imagination of fans in Argentina, with many already dubbing him the “next Lionel Messi.”
