Manchester United have invested heavily in defensive reinforcements this season, but they may yet make another significant acquisition before the transfer window closes next week. The possibility of a move for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite has resurfaced, adding to the speculation surrounding Old Trafford.
However, head coach Erik ten Hag is also focused on trimming his squad, with Facundo Pellistri’s imminent departure marking the beginning of several expected exits in the coming days. Meanwhile, Brazilian midfielder Casemiro appears to have secured his place in the squad following a strong pre-season performance.
Here are the latest updates from Manchester United:
Pellistri’s Departure
Manchester United are streamlining their squad, with Facundo Pellistri set to join Panathinaikos for £5.1 million. The deal is close to completion and will include a 40 percent sell-on clause. Pellistri, 22, has had loan spells with Alaves and Granada, and made four starts for United. Despite featuring in the Community Shield penalty shootout loss to Manchester City, Pellistri’s desire for regular senior football has led to his move. Erik ten Hag, who is seeking another midfielder to partner Kobbie Mainoo in his 4-2-3-1 formation, does not see Pellistri fitting into his plans for the upcoming season.
In addition to Pellistri, the expectation is that Hannibal Mejbri will also leave Old Trafford, with Burnley and Leeds competing for his services. Burnley, looking to replace the Fulham-bound Sander Berge, see Mejbri as a valuable addition.
Casemiro’s Reprieve
Casemiro has seemingly earned a reprieve at Manchester United after a strong pre-season showing. The 32-year-old Brazilian, who joined United in the summer of 2022, had links to a potential move away following a less impactful 2023/24 season. Despite speculation linking him to Saudi Arabia and suggestions that the club might sell him, recent reports indicate that Old Trafford will keep Casemiro. Ten Hag had strained his relationship with him last season due to concerns over his fitness, but recent performances have convinced the manager of his value.

Branthwaite’s Potential Move
Despite bolstering their defense with Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, Manchester United have not abandoned their interest in Jarrad Branthwaite. The Red Devils have already spent over £100 million on defensive reinforcements, including a £58.9 million deal for Yoro and a £42.8 million acquisition of De Ligt. Although United had previously offered up to £50 million for Branthwaite and have had multiple bids rejected, they remain interested in the 22-year-old Everton defender.
Branthwaite has also attracted interest from Manchester City and Liverpool this summer, though Everton have made it clear they do not intend to sell him to Liverpool. United’s pursuit of Branthwaite may continue into the next transfer window, with the club keen to secure his services in the future.
