Bruno Fernandes Backs Casemiro After Liverpool Defeat and Manager’s Tactical Shift

Bruno Fernandes has firmly backed Casemiro amidst scrutiny following Manchester United’s heavy defeat to Liverpool. The Brazilian midfielder made critical errors that contributed to United’s 3-0 loss at Anfield, leading to widespread criticism and his substitution at halftime.

During the match, Casemiro misplaced a pass in his own half, and Luis Díaz intercepted a subsequent dribble, leading to Liverpool’s two first-half goals. Despite his mistakes, Fernandes, the United captain, emphasized the need for collective responsibility rather than placing blame on individual players.

In his post-match comments to Sky Sports, Fernandes stated, “The goals are always self-inflicted. You need to make a mistake to concede a goal. We don’t need to be pointing fingers at anyone. That won’t help us now. When you concede a goal, you can’t just blame one mistake. Saying Casemiro lost the ball or Kobbie [Mainoo] lost the ball isn’t productive. They made mistakes because they were trying to be brave, which is part of football. Don’t make it individual.”

Fernandes acknowledged Casemiro’s experience, noting, “Casemiro is more experienced than me. I don’t need to tell him anything; he knows what football is about. He’s played for the two best clubs in the world.”

Despite his errors, Casemiro’s performance led to his replacement by youngster Toby Collyer at halftime. Manager Erik ten Hag’s decision to substitute Casemiro attracted attention, but Ten Hag remains confident in the midfielder’s ability to rebound from the setback.

“He knows the game,” Ten Hag said. “He will move on, and we will move on. He’s a great player, and we will continue to improve the team and the players. Casemiro has shown many times that he is a great character and a decisive presence in midfield. I am sure he will bounce back.”

The arrival of Manuel Ugarte, who joined from PSG on deadline day, has added competition for Casemiro’s spot, but Ten Hag and Fernandes believe in the Brazilian’s capacity to recover and contribute positively for the remainder of the season.
