Xavi Criticizes Barcelona Following Missed Opportunity and Injury Setbacks

In a match where opportunities were scarce, both teams struggled to break the deadlock at San Mames. However, Barcelona missed a chance to seize all three points and narrow the gap on Real Madrid, who drew with Valencia. Despite Girona’s loss to Mallorca, Barcelona remains eight points adrift of Real Madrid in third place.

Following the draw, Xavi lamented Barcelona’s performance, stating, “We didn’t play a good game. We didn’t attack well and we had to take a step forward. We’re sad because we didn’t give our best and the game required more from us. The missed opportunity saddens us; the team could have given so much more.

In addition to the disappointment of the result, Barcelona faced further setbacks with injuries to Frenkie de Jong and Pedri in the first half. De Jong was stretchered off after an ankle injury, while Pedri left the field in tears due to a thigh injury.

Xavi expressed concern over the injuries, saying, “We’re disappointed because we weren’t at the level that the game required. It’s unfortunate because of the injuries to two very important players. Between today and tomorrow, we’ll know more, but it doesn’t look good. We’re affected.”

On the other side, Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde praised his team’s resilience, stating, “It’s a draw that reminds us of a lot to come from a match as strong as Thursday’s. Our week was very emotional, and we finished with our tongues hanging out and melted. Barça started very well, but little by little, we became more competitive.”

Barcelona’s next fixture is against Mallorca on Friday, followed by a crucial Champions League clash against Napoli next Tuesday.
