Red Bull Advanced Technologies and AVL are joining forces to pioneer groundbreaking lightweight fuel cell technology.
Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the high performance division of Red Bull Racing Group, is collaborating with mobility technology leader AVL to push the boundaries of ultra-high-power density fuel cell technology.
The aim is to create lightweight solutions that are significantly lighter than traditional fuel cell systems, potentially reducing weight by up to two thirds. This advancement is crucial for achieving net zero carbon emissions across industries such as high performance automotive, motorsport, and aviation.
The partnership leverages AVL’s expertise in PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cell technology alongside. Red Bull’s innovative approaches to lightweight design, construction, and aerodynamics.
The project targets the development of a fuel cell system for high performance applications that surpasses current global standards. Initial investigations suggest that the completed system could achieve remarkable improvements in gravimetric power density, with values approaching 6kW/kg at the stack level and 2kW/kg at the fuel cell system level. This technology has the potential to deliver the world’s highest gravimetric power density PEM fuel cell system.

These advancements represent a significant leap in net zero carbon technology, enabling industries like aerospace. Future motorsport series, and various high payload applications to meet the power density requirements of hydrogen mobility.
Rob Gray, Technical Director at Red Bull Advanced Technologies, expressed excitement about the collaboration. Highlighting the application of F1-inspired engineering in solving real world challenges.
Matthias Wellers, Managing Director of AVL Powertrain UK Ltd, emphasized the combined expertise of both entities in advancing PEM fuel cell system technology to meet the demands of high performance applications.
This partnership signals a significant step forward in the development of lightweight fuel cell technology. With far reaching implications for sustainability and high performance industries.
