Sangakkara Shares Thoughts on England’s White-Ball Coaching Job

Kumar Sangakkara has expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of coaching England’s white-ball cricket team but clarified that he has not received any formal approach for the role. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is currently searching for a new white-ball head coach following Matthew Mott’s resignation on July 30. Mott’s tenure saw disappointing performances at both the 2023 ODI World Cup and June’s T20 World Cup. In the interim, former England batter Marcus Trescothick has stepped in as head coach for the upcoming white-ball series against Australia in September.

Sangakkara, the Director of Cricket and head coach of the Rajasthan Royals, is considered a leading candidate for the position. He has worked closely with England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler during the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, Sangakkara noted that while his name has been mentioned, he has not been officially approached by the ECB.

“It’s an exciting prospect for anyone, but there are many strong candidates out there,” Sangakkara said. He praised Matthew Mott for his efforts and commended Jos Buttler for continuing as captain. He also applauded Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket, for his visionary leadership.

Sangakkara, currently a commentator for Sky Sports’ The Hundred, expressed satisfaction with his role at the Rajasthan Royals. “I am very happy at the moment. The experience with the Rajasthan Royals has been fulfilling and enjoyable over the past four years,” he added.
