Arne Slot expressed strong opposition when questioned about potentially abandoning Jurgen Klopp’s renowned 4-3-3 formation as he steps into the role at Liverpool.
Klopp, 57, departed this summer after nearly nine years at Anfield, leaving behind a legacy that includes a Premier League title, an FA Cup, and a Champions League trophy. Despite winning the Premier League in the 2019/20 season with a significant lead over Manchester City, Liverpool struggled to maintain that dominance in subsequent seasons, fluctuating between second, third, and fifth place.
The 45-year-old Dutchman, who officially took over on June 1 following successful managerial spells at Cambuur, AZ Alkmaar, and Feyenoord, faced questions about his tactical approach in the English Premier League. According to Liverpool reporter David Lynch, Slot was particularly irked by a query regarding whether he would adopt or discard Klopp’s established 4-3-3 system, which has been pivotal to Liverpool’s success.
“One of the questions posed to him was about the formation,” Lynch explained. “Based on insights from those more familiar with the Dutch Eredivisie, there was a notion that he favored a 4-2-3-1 setup. However, Slot was visibly taken aback by this assumption. He firmly rejected any suggestion of abandoning Klopp’s 4-3-3, emphasizing his team’s flexibility in using various formations depending on the game and circumstances.”
Slot emphasized his commitment to fluid and adaptable gameplay, asserting, “If anyone closely watches my teams, they wouldn’t see us playing in a rigid 4-2-3-1. At Feyenoord, for instance, we predominantly operated in a 4-3-3 formation.”
In other discussions, Slot outlined his strategic vision for Liverpool’s key players, such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cody Gakpo, whose optimal positions have been subjects of debate.

“For Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cody Gakpo, I have a very clear idea of where they can excel,” Slot remarked. “However, out of respect for the players and our ongoing discussions, I prefer not to divulge specific plans today.”
Liverpool faces challenges this summer with the departures of Thiago Alcántara and Joel Matip, prompting the need to strengthen their squad. Additionally, speculation surrounds Alexander-Arnold’s future, with Real Madrid reportedly interested in the right-back, whose contract has just one year remaining.
The negotiation of a contract extension for Alexander-Arnold remains uncertain, leaving fans eager for developments as the transfer window progresses.
