Manchester United are eyeing a transfer for Netherlands forward Joshua Zirkzee, who currently plays for Bologna. The striker, now at Euro 2024 with his national team, has attracted interest from the Red Devils and several other European clubs. United’s interest in Zirkzee is reportedly ‘advanced,’ with discussions ongoing with the player’s representatives.
Despite this, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s team has yet to approach Bologna directly to negotiate a move. Zirkzee has a £34 million release clause in his contract, which runs until 2026. Significant changes could be looming for the Serie A club, which recently witnessed the departure of head coach Thiago Motta to Juventus.
Zirkzee had a breakout season in Italy, scoring 12 goals in his second campaign with Bologna. The 23-year-old previously played for Bayern Munich’s first team and spent time on loan at Parma and Anderlecht. Where he scored 18 goals during his stint in Belgium.
The Dutch forward has also drawn attention from AC Milan, Arsenal, and Juventus. However, Manchester United’s interest is seen as a serious threat to these clubs’ chances of securing a deal. Milan has been negotiating over the £12.7 million commission demanded by Zirkzee’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, without reaching a resolution.
United appear willing to meet the commission requirements, a stance that could give them an advantage. Joorabchian, known for orchestrating Carlos Tevez’s move to Old Trafford. Is seeking significant compensation for negotiating Zirkzee’s release clause, enabling a relatively cut-price deal.

Despite United’s interest, Zirkzee’s preferred destination is believed to be Milan, where he idolizes Zlatan Ibrahimovic, now part of the club’s hierarchy. Milan’s reluctance to pay hefty agent fees, however, complicates their pursuit.
Former Netherlands boss Frank de Boer has suggested that Zirkzee should consider Arsenal. “I have great respect for Arsenal; they have patience. For example, they had it with [Mikel] Arteta, who didn’t start well,” De Boer told Calciomercato. “In some clubs, if it happens like this, you are already out. And he has played very well in the last two years, Inter also play well. If I have to say someone, I prefer Arsenal because they have the patience to wait for him and give him confidence.”
As the summer transfer window progresses, it remains to be seen where Zirkzee will end up, but Manchester United’s willingness to meet the demands set by his agent could be a decisive factor.
