Fabio Quartararo Champions Augusto Fernandez for Yamaha MotoGP Test Rider Role

Fabio Quartararo is advocating for Augusto Fernandez to secure a test rider position with Yamaha for the 2025 MotoGP season.

Fernandez, who will be without a seat at Tech3 KTM next year, faces an uncertain future in the premier class. Yamaha, meanwhile, is looking to add second test rider to join Cal Crutchlow, who is currently sidelined due to injury.

Yamaha World Superbike rider Remy Gardner temporarily replaced Crutchlow for two MotoGP races. Standing in for Alex Rins in Germany and as a wild card at Silverstone.

Quartararo, the 2021 MotoGP World Champion, has been vocal about his support for Fernandez. Quartararo stated at the Red Bull Ring that he had been pushing for a test rider with recent MotoGP experience and high motivation. “Augusto is a rider I’ve been advocating for quite a few months.”

Quartararo also noted that Fernandez could have opportunities to compete as a wild card with Yamaha, which might help him relaunch his MotoGP career. “With four Yamahas on the grid next year, if Augusto performs well. He could have a chance to return to full-time competition,” Quartararo added. “Finding a rider eager to contribute and provide valuable feedback is crucial.”

Fernandez initially viewed the test rider role as akin to retirement but now sees it as a potential pathway back to a MotoGP race seat. “At first, I thought it was like retiring, but now I believe it’s the best chance to stay in the paddock compared to moving to World Superbike,” said the 26-year-old. “I’m not ready to close the MotoGP chapter yet. Many riders have achieved their peak later in their careers. And I’m determined to work hard and prove that I deserve another chance.”

While the lineup for the new Pramac Yamaha project remains unannounced, expectations are high that Miguel Oliveira will secure one of the spots. With Jack Miller emerging as a potential candidate for the other. Quartararo and Alex Rins will continue with the factory Yamaha team.
