2024 Formula 1 Driver Rankings #6: Oscar Piastri

Oscar Piastri’s second full season in Formula 1 has been nothing short of impressive, with the Australian showing his considerable potential, at times even challenging his more experienced teammate, Lando Norris, and playing a pivotal role in McLaren’s success. Though Piastri’s performances occasionally hindered Norris’ championship hopes, the young driver also showcased his ability to deliver strong results.

Piastri’s breakthrough victory in Hungary was a significant milestone in his career, though it was somewhat overshadowed by the dramatic situation where Norris, having inherited the lead during pit stops, agonized over whether to let Piastri through. However, Piastri had already demonstrated his race-winning potential earlier in the season, notably coming close to victory on multiple occasions.

A team penalty thwarted his performance at Imola, and a track limits penalty in Austria further hampered his chances. At Silverstone, a tactical misstep by McLaren kept him out of the win. Despite these setbacks, Piastri’s form improved dramatically midway through the season, earning him praise for several strong performances, including outpacing Norris for second place at Spa, and securing his second win of the year in Baku by passing Charles Leclerc.

Piastri’s performances at Monza and Baku were among the highlights of his season. In Monza, a poor strategy call cost him a potential victory, but his consistency continued to shine. There were instances where he managed to beat Norris, but on several occasions, his teammate’s superior pace left Piastri trailing. Notably, Piastri struggled to match Norris’s speed in Shanghai, Catalunya, Zandvoort, and Singapore.

Despite these challenges, Piastri’s overall season was solid. He showed steady improvement and consistently delivered strong drives, with no significant errors. While the qualifying gap to Norris did widen in his second year, Piastri’s performances and growth signal that he could be a future champion in Formula 1.
