Enea Bastianini, who makes the switch to Tech3 KTM in 2025 after four years with Ducati, has advised KTM not to try to replicate Ducati’s success by turning the RC16 into a copy of the Italian manufacturer’s dominant machine.

The seven-time Grand Prix winner expressed surprise at some aspects of the KTM RC16 during his November test, but he believes the bike has its own unique strengths. Bastianini emphasized the importance of maintaining KTM’s identity rather than attempting to mirror Ducati’s engineering.

A Different Approach, But Room for Growth

Bastianini acknowledged the impressive qualities of the Ducati, but stressed the need for KTM to stay true to its own design philosophy. He said:

“Ducati did a fantastic job, and their bike was exceptional. But I think the RC16 has potential in its own right.”

While he noted the differences between the two bikes, Bastianini was keen to avoid making direct comparisons. He stated that the RC16 felt good right from the start, especially in terms of set-up and rider position. However, he also mentioned that, having only completed 50 laps, he needed more time to assess the bike’s performance fully.

“I was surprised by the bike’s grip, especially on entry. But we need to improve on the drive; Ducati was very good there. However, I don’t want to make too many comparisons. This bike is different and should stay a KTM. We need to strengthen the bike’s best aspects.”

Adapting to KTM and Working with Familiar Faces

Bastianini’s transition to KTM is made easier by his reunion with Alberto Giribuola, his former crew chief at Gresini Ducati in 2022. Bastianini believes that having Giribuola back in his corner will accelerate his adaptation to the RC16.

“It’s great to have Albi back with me,” said Bastianini. “He knows my style well and understands exactly what I need, which will help shorten my adaptation process. We’ve already discussed modifications to the bike before the test, and I’m excited to see how quickly we can make progress.”

Bastianini’s focus is clear: develop the RC16 into a competitive machine on its own merits, without compromising KTM’s distinct approach. With his experience and familiarity with his crew, he is optimistic about a strong start to the season.
