Naoya Inoue vs. Ye Joon Kim: Weigh-In Results and Fight Preview

Unified super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue (28-0, 25 KOs) weighed in at 121.8 pounds for his upcoming bout against substitute challenger Ye Joon Kim (21-2-2, 13 KOs), who came in slightly lighter at 121.7 pounds. This Friday, January 24, the fight will headline at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan, and ESPN+ will broadcast it at 4:15 a.m. ET/1:15 a.m. PT.

A Somber Weigh-In

The weigh-in carried an unusually subdued tone, with both fighters maintaining serious expressions throughout. Originally, Inoue had been set to defend his titles against Australia’s Sam Goodman, but an injury forced Goodman to withdraw, leading to the selection of Kim as a last-minute replacement.

While Kim’s arrival salvages the event, the matchup lacks the intrigue fans were hoping for. Fans consider both Goodman and Kim light punchers with limited profiles, posing little threat to the reigning champion, Inoue. The quick replacement, though necessary, has done little to elevate excitement for the bout.

Who Is Ye Joon Kim?

Inoue

Kim, a relatively unknown challenger, has spent much of his 13-year career fighting lower-tier opponents and has yet to secure a signature victory to warrant a title shot. While his selection makes logistical sense given the short preparation time, some fans are questioning why the team didn’t pursue a more recognizable and challenging opponent.

Inoue’s Recent Journey

At 31, Inoue remains one of boxing’s most dominant forces. However, his recent opponents haven’t generated the same buzz as his marquee 2023 bout against Stephen Fulton, which captivated fans in the U.S. and beyond. Since then, Inoue has claimed victories over TJ Doheny, Luis Nery, and Marlon Tapales, but those fights lacked the blockbuster appeal of his earlier contests.

Inoue

What’s at Stake

Despite the underwhelming lead-up, Friday’s fight offers Inoue an opportunity to maintain his unblemished record and further solidify his legacy as a pound-for-pound great. For Kim, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to shock the world, although few expect him to pose a serious challenge.

Broadcast Details

ESPN+ will air the event live, with hardcore boxing fans in the U.S. likely setting their alarms early to catch the action. While the matchup may lack star power, Inoue’s reputation alone ensures that the fight will still draw attention from diehard supporters.

The stage is set for another dominant performance by Inoue, but the question remains: when will the “Monster” face another opponent who truly pushes him to his limits?
