Renowned boxing analyst Gareth A. Davies has cast doubt on whether Anthony Joshua or Tyson Fury will ever reclaim a heavyweight world title before they retire. While Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) has the tools—power, speed, and ambition—necessary to make another run, Fury (36-2, 24 KOs) seems less likely, especially following his retirement after his second defeat to Oleksandr Usyk on December 21st.
Fury’s Retirement: Real or Temporary?

Fury’s announcement of retirement has sparked skepticism, with many viewing it as another of his infamous short-lived exits from the sport. Known as the “Gypsy King,” Fury has retired and returned multiple times before, often lured back by big paydays and the thrill of competition. However, at 36, his career might finally be winding down, leaving questions about whether he has the drive to regain his place at the top.
Joshua’s Next Steps

Anthony Joshua’s recent decisions have also raised eyebrows. After suffering a fifth-round knockout loss to Daniel Dubois on September 21st, the former two-time champion declined an immediate rematch. While promoter Eddie Hearn cited injuries as the reason, Joshua’s extended absence has fueled concerns about his hunger for a comeback.
Joshua appears to be waiting for Fury to return, but such a strategy is risky, as Fury could remain retired for years, similar to his hiatus following the Wladimir Klitschko fight in 2015.
“I don’t think he should walk away right now,” said Davies. “He has opportunities to be in terrific fights. The Fury-Joshua matchup must happen to define this era of boxing.”
The Changing of the Guard
Davies believes the heavyweight division is undergoing a transition, with younger fighters like Daniel Dubois and Moses Itauma emerging as the new contenders. He speculates that neither Fury nor Joshua has the appetite for extended campaigns, and their respective careers may be winding down.

However, Joshua’s path to redemption may not be entirely closed. “If he wins a shootout with Daniel Dubois, then he could win another world title again,” said Davies. Dubois, currently holding the IBF title, is set to defend it against Joseph Parker on February 22nd in Riyadh. Should Joshua aim to regain his title, a rematch with Dubois appears essential.
The Fight Fans Deserve
Despite their recent struggles, one fight still looms large: Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua. “It would be a travesty if the two men don’t meet,” Davies remarked. Such a clash would not only settle unfinished business but also serve as a fitting conclusion to an era dominated by their names.
For now, Joshua must stay active, perhaps taking a tune-up fight to maintain sharpness, while the boxing world awaits clarity on Fury’s future. If the stars align, Fury vs. Joshua could become the defining fight of their generation.
