Mercedes driver George Russell remains unfazed by critics who claim he makes too many errors under pressure. In an interview, Russell addressed these criticisms while showcasing his determination and focus.
On a rainy day in the Barcelona paddock, Russell was reminded of his costly mistakes at the Canadian Grand Prix. Where he led from pole position but fell behind due to errors and a clash with Oscar Piastri. However, he redeemed himself with a stellar performance in Spain, battling Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, and engaging in a thrilling contest with teammate Lewis Hamilton. Despite finishing behind them, he impressed with his driving prowess and subsequently won the Austrian Grand Prix.
“I have no need to respond to those people [who say I crack under pressure],” Russell stated, before adding. “I could drive one tenth off the pace for 70-laps in a row and I wouldn’t make a single mistake. [In] 2022 I didn’t make a single mistake in the whole season, but I wasn’t pushing myself the way I’m pushing myself now.”

Russell emphasized that pushing himself to the limit has led to his improved performance this season, where he has out-qualified his teammate in most races. He highlighted that playing it safe and finishing third may look flawless, but he prefers to push beyond his limits for potential victories.
Reflecting on his career, Russell acknowledged that mistakes are part of the process when striving for excellence. “If it’s a win today, take the win; if it’s a P3, take the P3,” he explained. “Mistakes happen, it’s life. We’ve all been through times where these mistakes happen, but they happen as I’m pushing myself above and beyond.”
Russell’s impressive qualifying record against Hamilton this season (11-3 including sprints) demonstrates his ability to raise his game when it matters. He expressed satisfaction with his performance, acknowledging the challenges and risks he takes in pursuit of victories.
Specifically addressing the Canadian Grand Prix, Russell remarked on the competitive nature of the race, where even top drivers like Verstappen made mistakes. He attributed his errors to the relentless pursuit of victory, noting that small mistakes can have significant consequences.
As Russell prepares for the British Grand Prix, his resolve remains strong. Despite Mercedes’ struggles in the title race, he is determined to seize every opportunity. Reflecting on his career, he mentioned key moments like the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, where a potential victory slipped away due to circumstances beyond his control.
“In my career so far in F1 I’ve had three shots at victory,” Russell said. “Bahrain 2020, which should have been a victory, was outside of my control. Brazil [2022], and then Montreal. If I count Bahrain as a victory, I think I’m there to take those moments as they come.”
Russell’s determination to push his limits and embrace challenges underlines his commitment to achieving success in Formula 1. Undeterred by critics who question his ability to handle pressure.
