Arsenal may face a defensive setback ahead of their crucial Premier League clash against Aston Villa on Saturday night, as William Saliba’s fitness has come under question. The French center-back, a linchpin in Arsenal’s defense this season, raised concerns after appearing to sustain a potential hamstring issue late in the 2-1 victory over Tottenham earlier this week.
Saliba has been instrumental in Arsenal’s league campaign, forming a formidable partnership with Gabriel Magalhães at the heart of the defense. Together, they have contributed significantly to the Gunners’ status as the team with the best defensive record in the league. However, the defender’s absence from Friday’s training session has fueled speculation about his availability for the Villa clash.
Manager Mikel Arteta remained tight-lipped regarding Saliba’s condition, stating:
“We have a few decisions to make this afternoon with the medical staff to understand whether they are in the best condition for this game or the next one. So, we’ll decide that.”
If Saliba is deemed unfit, Jakub Kiwior, who participated in the latest training session, is likely to step in alongside Gabriel. This comes as Arsenal’s defensive depth is already stretched thin, with Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu sidelined due to injuries, and Riccardo Calafiori still unavailable.
Arsenal, currently four points behind league leaders Liverpool, face a tough test against a Villa side pushing for a top-four finish. Arteta acknowledged the challenge posed by Unai Emery’s well-drilled team, saying:

“We know the difficulty of the team that they are, that’s why they’re performing so well. They have an excellent coach, very good players, and strong organization. We’ll have to be at our best to win tomorrow night.”
The Villa Park fixture carries added significance as Arsenal aim to close the gap at the top while maintaining momentum in the race for the Premier League title. Arteta emphasized the importance of capitalizing on opportunities:
“We are playing to win, and that’s exactly where we want to be. It’s always crucial to take advantage of moments when other teams drop points, and we need many more of those because of where we are.”
With Villa defeating Arsenal last season and proving to be tough opponents at home, the Gunners will need to overcome both their defensive concerns and a determined Villa side to secure a vital three points.
