Merseyside Police have confirmed the arrest of nine individuals in connection with tragedy chanting incidents during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.
The arrested individuals, aged between 19 and 57, hail from Greater Manchester, Cheshire, and Lancashire. Among them, a 28 year old man was also detained on suspicion of assault.
One of the suspects, a 19 year old from Medlar with Wesham in Lancashire, has been formally charged with a public order offence related to tragedy chanting under the 1991 Football Offences Act. He is scheduled to appear before Sefton Magistrates’ Court next month.
The arrests come as authorities continue their efforts to crack down on inappropriate behavior at football matches, with tragedy chanting becoming a focal point of concern for fans and officials alike.
Liverpool’s win over Manchester City solidified their position at the top of the Premier League table, with the team now nine points clear of their closest rivals. However, the match’s atmosphere was marred by the alleged misconduct, prompting swift action from law enforcement.
