Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that both Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori could feature in the upcoming Premier League match against Fulham on Sunday, despite missing the 2-0 victory over Manchester United.
The Gunners secured an important win at the Emirates on Wednesday night, with defenders Jurrien Timber and William Saliba scoring from set-pieces to seal the victory against a rejuvenated United side, managed by Ruben Amorim. Although Arsenal were without Gabriel and Calafiori. Who were sidelined after picking up knocks during last week’s 5-2 win over West Ham, the team’s strong defensive display ensured the absences were not felt.
Arteta explained the decision to leave both players out, emphasizing that it was a precautionary measure to avoid aggravating their injuries. “With Gabi, it would’ve been a big risk to play him today because he felt something against West Ham,” Arteta said after the match. “Sunday is a possibility, same with Ricci [Calafiori] as well.”
In their absence, Jakub Kiwior stepped into the centre-back role, while Oleksandr Zinchenko moved to left-back, and both were instrumental in maintaining a clean sheet. Arteta praised the duo for their performances, especially given their lack of recent first-team action. “Big credit to Jakub and Alex,” Arteta remarked. “It’s the first start for Jakub after a long time. You have to be strong against this kind of opposition and front players. They did magnificently well, and we trust them.”
Arsenal’s set-piece prowess was again on display, with the goals against United coming from corners. Arteta was asked if opposing teams are now wary of conceding corners to his side, given their impressive record. “I don’t know,” he replied. “We work on what we work. Attacking the box in various ways is part of how we approach the game, and we are very efficient. We will continue to find ways to improve.”
Arsenal’s victory lifted them to third place in the Premier League, keeping them in the hunt for the title as they prepare for their next fixture against Fulham on Sunday.
