Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim described his team’s dramatic stoppage-time 2-1 win over Rangers in the Europa League as “truly needed” following a difficult period for the club. The victory at Old Trafford marked only their second home win since mid-December and came on the heels of Sunday’s disappointing 3-1 loss to Brighton.
The match featured a tense finish. Jack Butland’s own goal gave Rangers the lead, but Cyriel Dessers equalized in the 88th minute. Bruno Fernandes sealed the win for United in the 92nd minute, igniting celebrations among the home crowd. “It was a victory we truly needed,” Amorim stated. “We knew it would be a tough game, but the result was fair.”
Alejandro Garnacho emerged as one of United’s standout performers. The young winger, linked with potential moves to Napoli and Chelsea—with the latter reportedly his preferred destination—impressed Amorim. When asked if this might have been Garnacho’s last game for United at Old Trafford, the coach remained noncommittal. “He’s a Manchester United player, and he played a very important role for us today,” Amorim said. “He’s improving in every aspect of his game, whether playing as a No. 10 or out wide. His desire and frustration when things don’t go well are signs of a player who wants more.”
Despite the positive result, United’s January transfer activity has been nonexistent. Amorim downplayed the lack of signings, emphasizing his focus on the current squad. “These are my players now,” he said. “I understand the financial situation of the club, and my priority is preparing for the next game.”

Injury concerns linger ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Fulham, with Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro doubtful after picking up knocks.
The club also announced an investigation into ticketing issues that allowed a significant number of Rangers fans into home supporter areas. Despite efforts to restrict ticket sales to United’s database and season-ticket holders, breaches occurred. United have vowed to impose the “strongest possible sanctions” on those responsible.
With this crucial win, United will look to build momentum as they navigate a challenging season under Amorim’s leadership.
