Arsenal forward Kai Havertz’s wife, Sophia, has revealed the distressing social media abuse she received following her husband’s missed chances in the team’s recent match against Manchester United. The German international missed a golden opportunity to secure a victory in normal time and then had his penalty saved by United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir during the shootout. United triumphed 5-3 in the penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw in regular time.
Sophia, who has been married to Havertz since last year, took to her Instagram story to share two direct messages she received in the aftermath of the match. The abusive messages shocked her, prompting her to call out the behavior. In one post, Sophia expressed her disbelief and anger over the comments.
“For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is so shocking to me. I hope you are so ashamed of yourself,” she wrote, sharing one of the offensive messages.
In another message, Sophia appealed for greater respect online, urging people to be more mindful of their words.
“I’m not sure what to even say but please guys, be more respectful. We are better than this,” she added.
Arsenal Football Club swiftly responded to the abuse, condemning the messages and taking action by reporting the incident to the police. The club is also working with a specialist data firm to track down those responsible for the harmful messages.

Kai and Sophia Havertz have been together since 2018, and the couple recently announced they are expecting their first child, with Sophia revealing her pregnancy in November.
The incident highlights the ongoing issue of online abuse directed at players and their families, with many calling for increased accountability for those who engage in such behavior.
