Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto is on the brink of a Premier League transfer, according to recent reports. The 32-year-old utility player, who is out of contract at the end of the season, is set to leave his long-time club on a free transfer.
Despite having initially agreed to a new deal with Barcelona, the club’s dire financial situation prevented them from registering the new contract. As a result, Roberto has decided to explore opportunities in the Premier League. Reports suggest that he has received an offer from an undisclosed Premier League club, and the move could be finalized in the coming days.
Arsenal and Manchester United have been long-time admirers of Roberto. Arsenal has shown interest in the Spanish international. While Manchester United previously attempted to secure his services, with a £36 million bid made back in 2017. Although the deal did not materialize at the time, United’s interest has persisted.
The potential move represents a significant shift in Roberto’s career plans. Former Barcelona manager Xavi had advocated for the club to renew Roberto’s contract, praising his versatility and dedication. Xavi described Roberto as an important player who understands and represents the essence of Barcelona. However, since Xavi’s departure, Roberto’s future has become uncertain under the new management of Hansi Flick.

Roberto will depart Barcelona having made 373 appearances and scored 19 goals, including the iconic strike that contributed to their memorable Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain.
Manchester United, under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s new leadership, is also pursuing other free agents this summer. Including French midfielder Adrien Rabiot and Uruguayan Manuel Ugarte. The club has already secured two signings: Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and Lille’s Leny Yoro.
