Chelsea have reportedly offered England international Ben Chilwell to Manchester United as they seek to reduce their wage bill. Chilwell, who joined Chelsea from Leicester City in 2020, has made over 100 appearances for the club but has struggled with injuries during his time in West London. Despite signing a contract extension in the 2022-23 season, which ties him to Chelsea until 2027. The 27-year-old has found himself out of favor under current manager Enzo Maresca.
Maresca has been candid about Chilwell’s situation, admitting that the left-back has struggled to find his place in the team and saw limited action during pre-season. The Italian manager has told Chilwell that he will have limited playing time unless he moves on. As a result, Chelsea have explored the possibility of transferring Chilwell to Premier League rivals Manchester United.
The move could address need for United, who are currently dealing with injuries to left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. According to talkSPORT, Chelsea have offered Chilwell to United, and the Blues would not block transfer if deal is reached. Chilwell was notably absent from the squad for Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Manchester City, where Marc Cucurella started at left-back.
Maresca elaborated on his decision regarding Chilwell, stating, “With Chilly, it’s quite clear. I love his attitude and way he trains, but he has struggled to find his best position within our system. It’s difficult for both the player and the team when someone trains hard but doesn’t get minutes. Sometimes, it’s better for a player to move on and get the playing time they need.”

Chelsea’s recent squads have excluded more than just Chilwell, leaving out other high-profile players as well. The team omitted Raheem Sterling from the lineup for the Europa Conference League play-off first leg against Servette, giving his squad number to new signing Pedro Neto. Sterling’s exclusion follows Maresca’s comments that he prefers different types of wingers, despite acknowledging Sterling’s quality.
Another notable omission is Joao Felix, who recently joined Chelsea from Atletico Madrid. However, Maresca expressed his excitement about the versatile Portuguese forward, stating, “He can play inside, outside, and even as a No.9. His versatility is one of the reasons we signed him, and we’re very happy to have him here.”
With the transfer window still open, uncertainty surrounds Chilwell’s future at Chelsea. Leaving questions about whether he will move to Manchester United or another club for more regular playing time.
