South Africa completed a historic and utterly dominant Test series victory over India, winning by a massive 408 runs – India’s heaviest defeat by runs in their Test history. Playing in front of near-empty stands at India’s newest Test venue, the visitors sealed their first Test series win in India in 25 years, and handed India their second series loss in 12 months after over a decade of home invincibility.

Simon Harmer and Marco Jansen were the standout performers. Harmer, who had endured a long absence from Test cricket after a modest 2015 tour of India, produced a record-breaking series with 17 wickets at an astonishing average of 8.94 – no bowler has ever done better in India. Jansen followed closely with 12 wickets at 10.08 and further showcased his all-round brilliance with a standout 93 in the first innings and a sensational one-handed catch to finish the match.

India’s troubles began early, losing captain Shubman Gill to injury only three balls into the Test. The hosts fell well short of South Africa’s first-innings 489 and were bowled out for 201, thanks largely to Jansen’s devastating 6 for 48. Forced to follow on, India again faltered, managing only 140, despite a fighting half-century from Ravindra Jadeja, who consciously avoided his trademark sword celebration out of respect to the situation.
Harmer dismantled India’s batting with skill and variation on a pitch offering consistent turn. He exploited multiple modes of dismissal – bowled, outside edge, and bat-pad – while Aiden Markram set a new world record for most catches in a match. Rishabh Pant fell while playing defensively, and several batters succumbed to lack of turn or extra bounce.
South Africa’s ruthless control was evident throughout, with captain Temba Bavuma extending his unbeaten run as Test captain to 12 matches. India, now at 48.15% points in the World Test Championship standings, face an uphill battle to qualify for the final, with at least 60% historically required. Meanwhile, the defending champions South Africa climbed to 75%.
In the end, fittingly, Jansen sealed the series with an extraordinary catch – another reminder that for this South African side, and especially Jansen, the ordinary simply does not apply.
