India’s Spinners Shine as Dube Helps Seal Series Win Over Australia

India took a 2-1 lead in the T20I series after defeating Australia by 48 runs on the Gold Coast, thanks to strong performances from their spinners and key breakthroughs from Shivam Dube. Defending a modest total of 167 for 8, India bowled out Australia for just 119, showcasing skill and composure on a surface that offered turn and grip — conditions both sides admitted resembled the subcontinent.

India’s Spinners Shine as Dube Helps Seal Series Win Over Australia

After being 121 for 2 in the 14th over, India’s innings lost momentum as Adam Zampa and Nathan Ellis tightened control in the latter stages. Zampa, returning after the birth of his second child, claimed three wickets for 45, while Ellis bowled brilliantly at the death, finishing with 3 for 21. Shubman Gill top-scored with 46, holding the innings together as others fell around him.

Australia began their chase confidently but soon crumbled under pressure. Mitchell Marsh (30) and Matthew Short gave them a platform, yet regular wickets derailed the pursuit. Axar Patel led India’s spin charge with 2 for 20 from four overs, including 12 dot balls, while Washington Sundar’s 3 for 3 completely strangled Australia’s middle order. Dube added two crucial wickets, including that of Tim David, who had briefly threatened with a towering six before falling the next ball.

Varun Chakravarthy sealed the win when Glenn Maxwell, returning from a wrist injury, failed to pick a googly and was bowled, ending Australia’s faint hopes. The collapse — losing seven wickets for just 28 runs — summed up a forgettable batting effort.

Earlier, Zampa had sparked Australia’s comeback after a strong Indian start. He dismissed Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Jitesh Sharma, while Ellis’s variation and precision at the death kept India from reaching a bigger total. Despite India’s mid-innings stutter, their bowlers more than made up for it, exploiting the slowing surface masterfully.

The result delighted the 20,000-strong crowd and ensured India an unassailable series lead ahead of the final game at the Gabba. For Australia, the loss highlighted their struggles against spin — a concern they’ll need to address with the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka less than a year away.
