Former Real Madrid and Netherlands coach Leo Beenhakker has passed away at the age of 82, as confirmed by the Spanish club on Thursday. Beenhakker was a prominent figure in world football, having managed top European clubs and several national teams during his illustrious career.
The Dutch tactician enjoyed successful spells with Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord. He led Ajax to league titles in the 1979–80 and 1989–90 seasons and later guided Feyenoord to the Eredivisie crown in 1998–99. Beenhakker also served as head coach of the Netherlands national team and led other international sides, including Saudi Arabia, Poland, and Trinidad and Tobago.
However, Beenhakker’s most decorated stint came during his time at Real Madrid. He guided the club to significant domestic success from 1986 to 1989, with a brief return in 1992. Under his leadership, Real Madrid won three consecutive La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, and two Supercopa de España trophies. His tactical acumen and leadership left a lasting legacy at the Bernabéu.
Real Madrid honored their former coach in an official statement, expressing deep sorrow over Leo Beenhakker’s passing. The club, along with its president and board of directors, extended heartfelt condolences to his family, former clubs, and loved ones, acknowledging his legendary status at the club.
The club added, “Leo Beenhakker has passed away at the age of 82. Real Madrid extends its condolences to all Madridistas. May he rest in peace.”
