The story follows Amate Yuzuriha, a high-school student living peacefully in a space colony. She encounters Nyaan, a war refugee, and is drawn into the illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle. Under the alias “Machu,” she battles fiercely, piloting the GQuuuuuuX. Her world changes when she encounters an unidentified Gundam mobile suit pursued by the space force and police, piloted by a boy named Shūji.

The Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- anime film, a re-edited version of the first four TV episodes, opened in Japan on January 17 and debuted at #1 at the box office. It sold 352,500 tickets and earned 598.8 million yen (US$3.83 million) in its first three days. The film has since sold 1.80 million tickets, grossing 2.97 billion yen (US$19.92 million).

It has now surpassed the 1982 Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space film’s lifetime earnings of 2.3 billion yen (US$14.88 million). This makes it the second highest-earning Gundam film in Japan, behind Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM, which grossed 4.79 billion yen (US$31.05 million) during its initial run. Including later special screenings, Gundam Seed FREEDOM has earned 5.38 billion yen (US$35.5 million).

The GQuuuuuuX film introduced MX4D and 4DX screenings and added special post-credits footage teasing future story developments on February 22.
