Mitchell Starc has revealed that an ankle injury was the primary reason for missing the Champions Trophy, though “personal views” also influenced his decision. His absence, along with Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, has left Australia without its premier fast bowlers. However, a win against Afghanistan on Friday will secure their semi-final spot.

When the squad was announced, Cricket Australia stated that Starc withdrew for personal reasons, and both the team and board fully supported his decision. Speaking on the Willow Talk podcast, Starc did not elaborate on those reasons but emphasized his focus on the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa.
“There are a few reasons, including personal views, and I had ankle pain during the Test series [against Sri Lanka],” Starc said. “I aim to stay fit for the Test final and the West Indies tour.”
Starc has a deal with Delhi Capitals for the upcoming IPL, starting March 21. Cummins has started bowling again and expects to be fit for the IPL, while Hazlewood is pushing for a return with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
If Starc plays the WTC final and all three Tests against West Indies, he will earn his 100th cap in Jamaica in July. He is also 18 wickets away from reaching 400 Test wickets. His availability for the WTC final could give selectors a tough decision, with Scott Boland also making a strong case.
On the WTC format, Starc admitted he was initially indifferent but now sees its significance. However, he believes the system needs adjustments, particularly regarding home and away wins and the percentage-based points model. Despite its flaws, he is eager for Australia to win a second consecutive title.
