Saudi Pro League: A New Home for Africa’s Football Stars 🇸🇦⚽

The Saudi Pro League has become a thriving hub for African footballers, with big stars like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Sadio Mané, and Riyad Mahrez leading the way 🌟🔥. But beyond these household names, lesser-known talents are making a huge impact in the Middle East.

🚀 African Stars Shining Bright

Morocco’s Abderrazak Hamdallah, Cameroon’s Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, The Gambia’s Musa Barrow, and Comoros’ Myziane Maolida have all joined Aubameyang in hitting double figures for goals this season 🎯⚽.

While many African-players traditionally looked toward Europe, Saudi Arabia is now proving to be a lucrative and competitive alternative 🇸🇦💰.

👉 “It’s a different lifestyle and culture, but if you love the game, you can sacrifice anything,” said Nigerian winger Henry Onyekuru, who joined Al-Fayah in 2023.

🛡️ Defensive Pillars Holding Strong

It’s not just about attacking talent—defenders like Kalidou Koulibaly (Senegal) and William Troost-Ekong (Nigeria) have become key figures in their respective teams.

👉 “The climate is similar to Africa, and there are big spaces in games, allowing us to showcase our athleticism,” said Troost-Ekong, who captains Al-Kholood.

🎯 A Focused Environment for Success

Onyekuru, who played for top European clubs like Monaco, Galatasaray, and Olympiacos, believes the structured lifestyle in Saudi Arabia benefits African players 🏋️‍♂️🥗.

💬 “Some players love clubbing, but here, it’s all about training, resting, and focusing on the game. You sleep well, train well, and play well,” he explained.

His disciplined approach paid off—he netted 10 goals and provided assists for Zambian striker Fashion Sakala, who scored 19times.

🤝 A Strong African Brotherhood

With Saudi Pro League clubs now allowed 10 foreign signings, more African players are considering the switch.

📢 “I talk to many Nigerian players at national team camps, and they’re interested in coming here,” said Troost-Ekong.

Having played against stars like Franck Kessié, Riyad Mahrez, Sadio Mané, and Koulibaly, he feels a bond between African players in Saudi Arabia 🇳🇬🇲🇦🇸🇳.

💬 “Whenever I see them, I’m happy. There’s a real unity and brotherhood among us—we come from the same background and share the same dreams.”

🔥 Saudi Clubs Eyeing African Talent

The league is also investing in young African players. With a rule requiring two foreign signings to be under 21, teams are now recruiting directly from Africa 🌱⚽.

🔹 Al-Kholood signed Nigerian midfielder Ambrose Ochigbo (20) from Tunisia’s ES Zarzis 🇳🇬.
🔹 Al-Qadsiah brought in Ghanaian striker Jerry Afriyie (18) from Thoughts FC 🇬🇭, before loaning him to Spain’s CD Lugo 🇪🇸.

💬 “More young players are skipping Europe and heading straight to Saudi Arabia,” said Troost-Ekong.

With Saudi clubs developing and coaching African talent at a younger age, the trend is only set to grow 📈🔥.
