Sri Lanka is aiming for a comeback in the second Test against Australia after losing the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy in the series opener. The match in Galle, starting Thursday, February 6, offers the hosts a chance to level the series.
Sri Lankan selectors have made key changes to the squad. Sri Lanka recalled spin all-rounder Ramesh Mendis after his impressive performances in the Major League Tournament, the country’s top domestic first-class competition. Dropped after a poor outing against New Zealand in November, Mendis has since taken 24 wickets at an average of 21.91 for Moors Sports Club. With Galle’s pitch expected to favor spinners more than in the first Test, his inclusion adds depth to the bowling attack.
Opening batter Pathum Nissanka also returns after missing the first Test due to a groin strain sustained in the T20I series against New Zealand. He underwent rehabilitation in Colombo and is now fit to rejoin the team. His presence will bolster Sri Lanka’s batting lineup, which struggled in the first match.
Sri Lanka has released left-arm seamer Vishwa Fernando and top-order batter Lahiru Udara from the 18-member squad to make room for the changes.
Despite losing their shot at the trophy, Sri Lanka aims to draw the series and give a fitting farewell to Dimuth Karunaratne, who will play his 100th and final Test. Meanwhile, Australia, chasing their first series win in Sri Lanka in 14 years, looks to maintain their dominance and finish the World Test Championship League Stage strongly before the final later this year.
