Eddie Jack took three wickets as England Men U19s bowled out South Africa Men U19s for 224 on the first day of the second Youth Test in Cape Town. Jack finished with figures of 3 for 42, including the key dismissal of top-scorer Paul James, who made 84. Seamers Alexander Wade and Harry Moore supported well, taking two wickets each.
England U19s, who narrowly missed victory in the first Youth Test last week, ended the day at 1 for 0, with captain Archie Vaughan unbeaten on one.
Jack struck early, dismissing Jorich van Schalkwyk, who edged behind to wicketkeeper Thomas Rew. Rew had a strong outing behind the stumps, finishing with four catches. The Young Proteas struggled early, slipping to 74 for 5 before captain Bennie Hansen and James led a recovery. They put together a crucial 73-run stand to steady the innings.
However, Vaughan broke the partnership when Hansen mistimed a reverse sweep, giving Rew another catch. Jack then wrapped up the innings in quick succession, dismissing James and last man Nathan Rossouw in the same over.
With the Young Lions now in control, they will look to build a strong first-innings lead when play resumes on day two.
