Mitchell Owen’s explosive century guided Hobart Hurricanes to their first-ever Big Bash League (BBL) title, as they comfortably chased down 183 against Sydney Thunder in the final. Owen’s equal-fastest BBL century, off just 39 balls, helped the Hurricanes achieve the highest chase in a BBL final with 35 balls to spare. His 108 runs, including 11 sixes, turned the match in the Hurricanes’ favor, and despite contributions from Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade, they finished with a seven-wicket victory.
Thunder had a solid start, with a 97-run opening partnership between captain David Warner and Jason Sangha. However, they were unable to maintain their momentum after a strong response from Hurricanes’ quicks Nathan Ellis and Riley Meredith. Warner’s leadership could not prevent the defeat, as Thunder’s batting depth failed them in the latter stages of the game.
Owen’s promotion to the opening slot was a masterstroke, and he wasted no time dismantling Thunder’s attack. By the time he reached his half-century in just 16 balls, the Hurricanes were already in control. His record-tying century, although falling short of the fastest BBL century record, secured a standing ovation from the crowd.
Ellis and Meredith were key in restricting Thunder’s batting, with Ellis taking 3 for 23. Thunder’s early advantage was wiped out as they struggled against Hurricanes’ disciplined bowling attack. Despite a strong start, Thunder’s inability to capitalize on the platform ultimately sealed their fate, and the Hurricanes took home the title in style.
