Mercedes has confirmed it will unveil its highly anticipated W16 Formula 1 car on 24 February 2025, just two days before pre-season testing begins in Bahrain. This marks a significant moment for the Brackley-based team, as it enters its first season without Lewis Hamilton since 2012. The 2025 driver lineup features George Russell and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Unlike previous years, Mercedes will skip its traditional launch event at Silverstone. Instead, the W16 will debut at the Bahrain International Circuit on 24 February, followed by a filming day at the same venue on 25 February. Pre-season testing will take place from 26-28 February, setting the stage for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park from 14-16 March.
Challenges and Learnings from 2024

The 2024 season was a mixed bag for Mercedes, finishing fourth in the constructors’ championship. Although the W15 saw the team return to winning ways, its performance was hindered by challenges such as:
- A narrow setup window.
- Rear tire overheating, especially at high-energy circuits and in hotter climates.
- A low ride-height dependency that reduced performance on bumpier tracks.
However, the W15 excelled in cooler conditions, as evidenced by its dominant performance during the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend. Trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin noted the team’s struggles with adapting to its all-new 2024 car concept and a slower update schedule compared to rival teams.
What’s Next?
Mercedes aims to address these issues with the W16, alongside revealing its 2025 livery at the collective F1 season launch at London’s O2 Arena on 18 February, an event commemorating Formula 1’s 75th anniversary.
