Madison Keys Stuns Elena Rybakina in Thrilling Australian Open Clash

Melbourne, Australia – Madison Keys delivered a remarkable performance to upset sixth-seeded Elena Rybakina 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 on Monday at Margaret Court Arena, earning a spot in the Australian Open quarter-finals and extending her unbeaten streak to nine matches in 2024.

The 19th-seeded Keys, who captured the Adelaide Open title earlier this month, reversed her fortunes against Rybakina after losing their previous two encounters. Despite a second-set slump where she dropped four consecutive games, Keys regained control in the decider with her aggressive play, neutralizing Rybakina’s potent serve and dictating the rallies.

“Her serve is such a weapon, so I knew I had to make her service games as competitive as possible,” Keys said after securing her third win over a top-10 player this year. “I just tried to get everything back over the net, and it paid off at critical moments.”

The players tightly contested the third set until 3-3, when Keys shifted gears and sealed the victory with a stunning cross-court winner on her second match point. She now faces Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, who earlier defeated Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 6-1.

Rybakina appeared hindered by a lower back injury sustained in the third round and is also navigating off-court challenges. The WTA has provisionally banned her coach, Stefano Vukov, pending an investigation, leaving her without his accreditation during the tournament.

“Of course, I want to have who I want in the box, but this situation is beyond my control,” Rybakina admitted. “I’ve been focusing on my matches, and I don’t think this affected my performance today.”

Iga Swiatek Cruises Into Quarter-Finals with Dominant Win

On Rod Laver Arena, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek delivered a masterclass, demolishing German lucky loser Eva Lys 6-0, 6-1 in just 59 minutes to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals for the second time.

Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam champion, maintained her exceptional form, conceding only 11 games across four matches in the tournament. “This was my first night session here, and I really enjoyed it,” Swiatek said. “I feel there’s still a lot I can improve, but matches like these give me confidence.”

The Polish star dismantled Lys with relentless pressure, securing the first set in 24 minutes and dominating the second despite Lys managing to avoid a double bagel with a spirited hold of serve. Swiatek’s next challenge will be against the winner of Emma Navarro and Daria Kasatkina.

As the tournament progresses, both Keys and Swiatek have emerged as formidable contenders, with their dynamic performances underscoring their determination to claim the Australian Open crown.
