Umar Nurmagomedov is stepping into a historic spotlight as he challenges Merab Dvalishvili for the bantamweight title at UFC 311’s co-main event on Saturday at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. This bout marks the start of a monumental month for Team Nurmagomedov, with teammates Islam Makhachev and Usman Nurmagomedov also gearing up for championship fights.
Nurmagomedov (18-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) aims not only to secure his first UFC title but also to inspire confidence in Makhachev (26-1 MMA, 15-1 UFC), who will defend his lightweight belt in the night’s main event against Arman Tsarukyan (22-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC). The back-to-back title bouts represent a first in UFC history, with one teammate competing for gold in the co-headliner and another defending it in the main event.
Acknowledging the gravity of the occasion, Nurmagomedov expressed the unique pressure on the team.
“It’s going to be a hard night for our team,” Nurmagomedov told MMA Junkie. “Two fights for the title very close together. It’s going to be nervous. Islam is going to be nervous watching my fight, but I will fight perfect. I will try to not even miss one punch, to give him good energy.”

The stakes extend beyond UFC 311. Usman Nurmagomedov, Umar’s brother, will defend his Bellator lightweight title on January 25 at Road to Dubai against Paul Hughes. Both Umar and Usman admitted the emotional toll of watching teammates fight, often finding it more stressful than stepping into the cage themselves.
“When you’re fighting, you can control everything,” Umar explained. “When someone else is fighting – your brother, your close friends – you can just give him advice. Fighting yourself is easier.”
With a perfect professional record and the guidance of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Javier Mendez, Umar is determined to deliver a flawless performance and set the tone for his team’s championship campaign.
UFC 311 promises a night of historic stakes, with Umar Nurmagomedov poised to make his mark and ensure his team’s momentum is unshaken heading into the main event.
