Cricket Australia has announced a strong 16-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. After a commanding 3-1 win in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, Australia will now face Sri Lanka in their final preparation for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. They have already secured their spot in the WTC final against South Africa at Lord’s and will aim to address key areas before the crucial clash.
Australia’s regular captain Pat Cummins will unfortunately miss the Sri Lanka tour since he awaits the birth of his second child. As a result, veteran batter Steve Smith will take charge as captain, with Travis Head named vice-captain. Moreover, this series presents an opportunity for Australia to test various combinations in challenging conditions, especially ahead of the World Test Championship final.
Promising all-rounder Cooper Connolly has earned a spot in the squad. Known for his left-arm off-spin and solid batting, Connolly adds depth to the team. Usman Khawaja retains his place despite a dip in form during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Young opener Sam Konstas will form a solid top-order alongside Nathan McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne.
Beau Webster is the only seam-bowling all-rounder in the squad, while the spin department will rely on Matthew Kuhnemann, Todd Murphy, and veteran Nathan Lyon to exploit Sri Lanka’s spin-friendly conditions. With Cummins absent, Mitchell Starc will lead Australia’s pace attack, supported by Scott Boland and Sean Abbott.
The two-match Test series against Sri Lanka will serve as Australia’s final opportunity to fine-tune their squad before taking on South Africa in the WTC final.
