Sutherland's all-round performance and Gardner's quick runs help Australia win the ODI series

Australia secured a 2-0 ODI series win over New Zealand with a commanding 75-run victory in Wellington. Ashleigh Gardner’s explosive 74 off 62 balls and Annabel Sutherland’s brilliant all-round display powered Australia to a strong total of 290 at the Basin Reserve.

Opting to bat, Australia started well with an 88-run opening stand between Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield. However, New Zealand fought back as Rosemary Mair and Amelia Kerr triggered a collapse, reducing Australia to 127 for 4. Gardner took charge in the latter stages, smashing boundaries to lift the total, while Sutherland added a steady 42. Amelia Kerr claimed 4 for 54, including key wickets of Healy and Ellyse Perry.

Chasing 291, New Zealand began aggressively. Bella James impressed early, but her misjudgment against Sutherland ended her innings. Suzie Bates, with a composed half-century, partnered Kerr to regain momentum. However, a mix-up resulted in Kerr’s run-out, and Sophie Devine’s dismissal for 27 further derailed their chase. Alana King shone with 3 for 34, and Sutherland capped her performance with 3 for 39 as New Zealand were bowled out for 215.

This win marked Australia’s 15th consecutive ODI triumph over New Zealand, maintaining their dominance in the Rose Bowl Trophy since 2000. The series highlighted Australia’s resurgence following their T20 World Cup semi-final exit, including a clean sweep against India earlier.

For New Zealand, this defeat added to their struggles in ODI cricket, jeopardizing their chances of direct qualification for the 2025 World Cup. Despite glimpses of competitiveness, they were ultimately outclassed in both matches.

The series wrapped up a busy schedule for both teams, with Australia’s focus now shifting to the Ashes next month.
