Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a two-day visit to Kuwait today, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Gulf nation in 43 years. The last Indian Prime Minister to visit Kuwait was Indira Gandhi in 1981. This landmark visit is expected to pave the way for enhanced India-Kuwait relations, particularly in the areas of trade, defence, and investment.
Key Highlights of PM Modi’s Visit:
- Strengthening Bilateral Relations: During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will engage with Kuwaiti leadership to discuss ways to deepen ties in critical areas, including defence, trade, and bilateral investment. Both countries are expected to formalize agreements, including a bilateral investment treaty and a defence cooperation pact, as part of the visit.
- Key Documents Expected to be Finalized: Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary (Overseas Indian Affairs) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), stated that several bilateral agreements are anticipated to be signed during the Prime Minister’s visit, which will further strengthen existing partnerships and unlock new avenues for future collaboration.
- Regional Cooperation with GCC: PM Modi’s visit will also focus on boosting India’s relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), of which Kuwait is the current chair. The GCC, comprising the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Qatar, is a key regional group, and the total volume of India’s trade with GCC countries was valued at USD 184.46 billion in the financial year 2022-23.
- Trade and Energy Ties: India and Kuwait share strong trade relations, with bilateral trade valued at USD 10.47 billion in the financial year 2023-24. Additionally, Kuwait is a major supplier of crude oil to India, meeting 3 percent of India’s energy needs.
- Focus on Indian Workers: Prime Minister Modi is set to visit an Indian labour camp in Kuwait, highlighting the importance of Indian workers in the country. This visit comes after a devastating fire in June that claimed the lives of over 45 Indian workers in a building in Kuwait’s Mangaf locality.
- Meeting Kuwaiti Leadership: The Prime Minister will meet Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Crown Prince, and the Prime Minister to discuss further strengthening ties. The Kuwaiti Crown Prince is also scheduled to host a banquet in honor of PM Modi.
- Cultural Engagement: In addition to his diplomatic engagements, PM Modi will attend the opening ceremony of the Gulf Cup football tournament, further deepening cultural ties between India and Kuwait.
This visit underscores the strong and growing partnership between India and Kuwait, as both nations work to enhance collaboration in key sectors, bolster trade, and address shared concerns such as the welfare of Indian workers abroad.
