Jamie Carragher has shared his thoughts on Mohamed Salah’s ongoing contract saga, suggesting the Liverpool star may ultimately sign a new deal due to limited alternatives at the elite level of European football. Despite nearing the end of his current contract, Salah remains Liverpool’s standout performer this season, leading the team’s scoring charts with 16 goals in all competitions.
The Egyptian forward’s latest contribution, a match-winning penalty against Girona in the Champions League, has highlighted his value to the team. However, with his future uncertain, speculation over his next move continues to dominate headlines.
Few Realistic Options for Salah
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher expressed skepticism about Salah’s potential destinations.
“I love Mo Salah; he’s one of the best players in the world. But when you’re earning the kind of money he is and looking for a raise, the options become limited,” said Carragher. “Real Madrid have plenty of attackers, Barcelona are in financial trouble, and PSG aren’t as competitive as Liverpool. Aside from Liverpool, there aren’t many clubs where he can realistically chase Champions League glory.”
Carragher also noted that Salah, at 31, is unlikely to move to Saudi Arabia in the immediate future, suggesting he may consider such a switch in a few years. Instead, he believes Salah’s drive to break records at Liverpool could motivate him to stay.
“He’s incredibly driven. I think he wants to achieve more records, whether that’s becoming Liverpool’s all-time top scorer or other milestones,” Carragher added.

Call for Transparency
Carragher criticized the lack of clarity surrounding Salah’s stance on a new contract.
“Salah reportedly earns £350,000 to £400,000 a week, and he deserves it. But if there’s an issue with the club not meeting his demands, then he should make that public. Transparency would allow everyone to assess the situation fairly,” he said.
Carragher also referred to Salah’s similar strategy two years ago, where he applied public pressure on the club before eventually signing an extension.
“He’s a global superstar, and I want him to stay. But from the club’s perspective, if he’s unhappy, he needs to clearly state what he’s asking for,” Carragher said.
Roy Keane’s Perspective
Fellow pundit Roy Keane weighed in, focusing on Salah’s performances on the pitch.
“The bottom line is you have to perform every week. All the off-field discussions will sort themselves out if he keeps delivering,” Keane said. “This is a test of Salah’s character, and so far, he’s risen to the occasion.”
What’s Next for Salah?
Salah has reportedly attracted interest from Saudi clubs and has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain, though PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has dismissed the rumors, confirming no discussions have taken place.
For now, Salah’s focus remains on Liverpool, where his goals and assists have propelled the team under manager Arne Slot. With nine more goals needed to match last season’s tally, the Egyptian continues to make his case for a lucrative new deal while maintaining the team’s domestic and European ambitions.
Whether Salah stays or seeks a new challenge, his performances on the pitch will likely be the defining factor in the resolution of this contract saga.
