Ruben Amorim’s tenure as Manchester United manager has featured frequent changes to his lineup, reminiscent of Claudio Ranieri’s days as ‘The Tinkerman’ at Chelsea. The Portuguese boss has made six changes in two of his first three matches and reduced it to four for Saturday’s clash against Nottingham Forest.
Some of the adjustments have been due to injuries and suspensions, limiting Amorim’s options and forcing him to adapt. However, his concerns about United’s fitness levels have also played a role in his decisions. Additionally, Amorim is keen to assess as many players as possible in his search for his ideal starting XI.
As Amorim continues to experiment with his squad, questions remain about the composition of his preferred 3-4-3 formation. The team that faced Forest on Saturday may be the closest to his long-term vision, even though it did not include key players like Marcus Rashford and Noussair Mazraoui, and despite the defeat.
Five matches into his reign, Amorim is eager to find a more settled lineup to help United climb the Premier League table. At present, only three players seem certain to feature regularly: goalkeeper Andre Onana, central defender Matthijs de Ligt, and captain Bruno Fernandes. These three have started every match under Amorim and are likely to remain pivotal in the manager’s setup.

The remaining eight spots in the lineup are still very much up for grabs, though some players are emerging as frontrunners. Lisandro Martínez, who has been sidelined by injury and suspension, is expected to return as a guaranteed starter when fit. Youngster Leny Yoro also has ambitions to claim a regular role in defense.
In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte look to be the long-term pairing, although their recent partnership has yielded two defeats, including the loss to Forest. On the flanks, Diogo Dalot, Mazraoui, and Amad Diallo all have claims to the wing-back roles, with Diallo in particular pushing for a more regular spot in the team. Up front, Rasmus Højlund, Rashford, and Joshua Zirkzee are all competing for a starting position.
Despite Amorim’s ongoing tinkering, only three players seem to be immune from rotation at this stage. As Manchester United looks to find consistency and move up the Premier League standings, it still has plenty of work to do in the search for a settled squad.
