Conway will miss the third Test to be with his partner for the birth of their first child

Devon Conway will miss New Zealand’s third and final Test against England this week to be with his family for the birth of his first child. The opening batter will remain in Wellington, where New Zealand suffered a heavy 323-run defeat in the second Test, losing the series. In his absence, the Auckland Aces have called up batter Mark Chapman as a replacement.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead expressed the team’s full support for Conway’s decision. “Family comes first in this environment, and we’re all really excited for Dev and his wife Kim to welcome their first child,” Stead said. He also praised Chapman’s recent form, noting his impressive 276 in the Plunket Shield after being part of the Test squad in India.

Conway’s absence could lead to a start for Will Young, who was the player of the series during New Zealand’s historic tour of India, scoring 244 runs at 48.40. Young has been on the sidelines as England clinched the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead. Young’s inclusion comes as Conway’s series average dropped to 5.25 after a five-ball duck in the second Test.

Black Caps skipper Tom Latham did not confirm any further changes for the third Test but mentioned the squad would assess the conditions at Seddon Park before finalizing the team. Left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner may come into consideration due to the flat nature of the pitch. Tim Southee, who will retire after the series, is expected to play his farewell match at his home ground, despite underperforming with the ball.
