Lionel Messi has been named the 2024 MLS MVP after an impressive campaign with Inter Miami, despite a challenging season marked by injuries.
The 37-year-old forward, who joined Miami in 2023 after a legendary stint with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, led his team to a record-breaking regular season points total. Lionel Messi registered an astounding 36 goal contributions, scoring 20 goals and providing 16 assists.
Though he appeared in only 19 regular-season matches and just two play-off games due to injury, Lionel Messi undeniably impacted the field. His performances helped guide Inter Miami to the MLS Cup play-offs, where they lost in the first round.
Players, club technical staff, and journalists voted for the MVP award, and Lionel Messi triumphed with 38.43% of the votes. He edged out Cucho Hernandez of Columbus Crew, who received 33.7%.
The honor, officially named the Landon Donovan MLS MVP, is a prestigious accolade in Major League Soccer. Previous recipients include the likes of Donovan, Republic of Ireland’s Robbie Keane, and Spain’s David Villa.
