South Africa posted 191 in their first innings against Sri Lanka at Kingsmead, recovering from a precarious 117 for 7. Despite ideal batting conditions with blue skies and sunshine, Sri Lanka’s bowlers, led by Lahiru Kumara’s pace (3 for 70), took 6 wickets for 111 runs in the morning session, gaining the upper hand. Asitha Fernando and Vishwa Fernando supported well, sharing five wickets and exploiting the pitch’s bounce and movement.
Temba Bavuma, returning after a two-month elbow injury layoff, scored 70 to hold the innings together. His composed strokeplay, including well-timed drives, suggested he had not been sidelined for long. He was the anchor of South Africa’s recovery, but without more support, he couldn’t build a larger score.
The day’s play started with rain, limiting action to just 20.4 overs, but Vishwa Fernando picked up where he left off, finding early movement. South Africa’s middle order crumbled as Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder fell to Kumara and Asitha. Mulder suffered a hand injury and retired hurt after being hit, leaving the lower order to bat with limited resources.
Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj showed resistance, with Maharaj smashing a six off Jayasuriya, but it was short-lived. Maharaj fell to a drive off Vishwa and Bavuma, soon after reaching his fifty, top-edged a pull shot to midwicket. South Africa’s tail folded quickly, with Kagiso Rabada hooking Asitha to deep backward square to end the innings.
