BCCI Reportedly Declines Mohammed Shami’s Participation in Australia Tour for Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Mohammed Shami’s much-anticipated comeback to the Indian Test squad has faced another hurdle, as reports suggest the BCCI currently has no plans to send him to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). Shami, who recently returned to competitive cricket after a year-long injury, impressed with a seven-wicket haul in a Ranji Trophy match. His performance fueled speculation about his inclusion in the BGT squad.

Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah had earlier hinted that discussions were ongoing regarding Shami’s potential addition to the team. However, according to a source in the BCCI, there is no immediate plan to include him. The board reportedly values the current bowling unit’s strong performance, highlighted by India’s commanding 295-run victory in the first Test at Perth.

“There has been no conversation around trying to send Shami to Australia, at least for now. The fast bowlers chosen for the tour and the playing XI for the opening Test have done their job very well,” the source told Times of India.

Bengal named Shami in their squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and the BCCI seems eager to evaluate his performance in more matches before deciding on his inclusion in a major series like the BGT. India’s bowlers were exceptional in the first Test, with Jasprit Bumrah leading the charge, picking up a five-wicket haul. India’s bowlers dismissed the Australian batting lineup for 104 and 238 in the two innings.

The second Test, a day-night affair, begins on December 6 at the Adelaide Oval. Rohit Sharma is set to return as captain, while Shubman Gill’s availability remains uncertain. With the current squad performing well, the management seems cautious about making any immediate changes.
