Fermin Aldeguer Makes Strong MotoGP Debut: “Everything Is Incredible,” Adapts Quickly to Ride-Height Device in First Test

MotoGP rookie Fermin Aldeguer made an impressive debut during his premier-class test at the Barcelona circuit, quickly adapting to some of the unique technologies of the top tier. One of the biggest challenges for the 2025 MotoGP rookie was mastering the ride-height device on his Gresini Ducati, a crucial component of modern MotoGP machines that lowers the rear of the bike to improve performance in slow corners.

Aldeguer quickly acquainted himself with the ride-height device and began using it from his very first lap. “I started to use it from the first lap because I said, ‘I have to be automatic with this thing,’” he explained. However, the initial experience was not without its difficulties. “The first run was crazy because sometimes, I put it, but I didn’t unlock it by braking hard enough. So I was in the third corner with the bike still down!” he recalled with a smile. Despite the early hiccups, Aldeguer continued to use the device throughout his 58 laps, finishing the test as the fastest rookie in 20th place, just 1.761 seconds behind his new teammate, Alex Marquez.

Reflecting on his performance, Aldeguer remained focused on gradual improvement. “This is the target [to be top rookie], but we have to stay calm and go step by step,” he said, acknowledging the steep learning curve ahead as he settles into the team and adapts to his new machine.

In addition to the ride-height device, Aldeguer had to adjust to Michelin tyres and carbon brakes, both significantly different from his previous Moto2 equipment. Despite the challenges, Aldeguer was quick to express his enthusiasm. “Today was very good because I feel incredible with the bike from the first lap,” he said. “Everything is incredible—the acceleration, the speed, but I think the most important was the brake point. It’s amazing, you can brake so late and still stop the bike. Understanding this on the first laps was difficult.”

Aldeguer also noted the differences in tyre performance, commenting on Michelin’s asymmetric tyres and their unique feel. However, he acknowledged the need for more laps to fully understand the bike’s limits. “The tyres are completely different from Pirelli in Moto2, but it’s hard to say exactly where the difference lies because the bike is also different. Michelin tyres have asymmetric designs, and you can really push on the left side, but maybe they were a little bit cold, and I lost the front once,” he explained, referencing a minor crash during testing.

Despite the challenges, Aldeguer’s adaptability was evident, with both the Ducati staff and his team expressing satisfaction with his progress. “I have to work a little bit more on my style with the bike,” he noted, “but it’s not time to think about the settings yet. We will see what’s happening in Sepang.”

Looking ahead, Aldeguer, like many of the other rookies, is focused on physical conditioning. “I feel good with my physical condition, only a little bit of arm pump and the surgery on my hand, but for sure I have work to do for a long race,” he said. Aldeguer, along with fellow rookies Somkiat Chantra and Ai Ogura, will continue preparing over the winter and will participate in the Sepang shakedown test starting January 31.

As the 2025 season approaches, Aldeguer’s promising debut signals great potential, with the young Spaniard determined to continue learning and progressing toward his goal of being one of the top rookies in MotoGP.
